ATD has designed and fitted a timing belt system to very accurately synchronize
the over-printing of customers messages, resulting in pure black images.
Harland Builders a well-known manufacturer of wooden potato crates required pure
black printing images. 2 Years ago ATD installed an IP8000 high resolution printing
system to mark customer branding logos and information onto the wooden planks
before the potato crate are assembled. Recently Harland’s customers requested the
printing to be much darker as the potato crates once delivered have a tough life,
being stored outside in all types of weather conditions.
The printing system is operated manually by moving the ATD IP8000 printhead
along the length of the potato crate plank, this movement is generally very fast and
variable in speed. The speed of printing is synchronised to the speed of travel by a
shaft encoder and this allowed a maximum print density of 8 drops per mm. Due to
the high speed the operators move the print head it was impossible to increase the
print density of the IP8000 system to make the images darker, without compromising
the printer reliability.
The solution was to overprint the images which, requires very accurate print
synchronisation. This was accomplished by installing a timing belt connected directly
to the IP8000 print head movement carriage. Once installed the customer can now
reliably overprint the messages as many times as required to produce pure black
printed images which have been tested for printing up to 40 drops per mm (5 Times
the original print density). The ink used is ATD Scantrue 2 Plus pigmented oil
based black ink. This ink is light fast, will not bleed or spread when wet or in frozen
